There are two types of engine oil: conventional and synthetic. Do you know which one is right for your car? If not, that's ok. At Pecheles Honda, we've talked to a lot of drivers from across the New Bern, Morehead City, and Havelock areas who weren't sure if synthetic or conventional oil was right for them. In this article, we'll help you understand the differences between the two.

How Are They Different?

Compared to conventional oil, synthetic oil is considerably more expensive, although it typically lasts longer than its conventional counterpart. However, that doesn't mean that synthetic oil is the right pick for every engine and driver. In fact, there are several reasons why conventional oil is perfectly suited to most engines.

Crude oil mined from the earth is combined with additives in a refinement plant to make conventional oil that's used in your vehicle's engine. Some experts have recommended using conventional oil for the first few thousand miles of use and then switching to synthetic oil after that. Inside your engine, conventional oil does a good job at lubricating the many moving metal parts, as well as keeping the engine clear of debris. As the mileage of your engine increases, some experts suggest switching to a synthetic oil blend.

Compared to synthetic oil, conventional oil is less expensive and can save you money if your engine doesn't require a synthetic blend. Most drivers can use conventional oil without any worry of damaging their engine. However, drivers who frequently find themselves driving in extremely high temperatures, dusty conditions, or towing heavy loads may benefit more from using a synthetic oil.

Pros & Cons

One major difference between conventional oil and synthetic oil is that synthetic oil takes much longer to break down. Since it's not breaking down nearly as quickly, we won't need to have the oil changed as often as if you were using conventional oil. However, it's important that you don't forget to change the synthetic oil at the appropriate intervals. Your service technician should be able to help you determine what's the right service interval for your vehicle.

Similar to conventional oil, synthetic oil works hard to keep the engine clean, reduce heat, and lubricate the moving parts. However, synthetic oil is notably better for use in extreme temperatures, making it a perfect fit for high-horsepower, turbocharged engines.

Do you need synthetic oil?

  • Do you frequently drive in temperature below 10 or above 90 degrees?
  • Do you drive in dusty conditions?
  • Do you drive in the city or other stop-and-go areas?
  • Do you make frequent short trips?
  • Do you often tow a heavy load?

If any of the above sounds familiar, then synthetic oil might be the right choice for your engine. However, unless your owner's manual specifies that synthetic oil is needed, the choice is up to you whether you prefer to use synthetic or conventional motor oil. It's important to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision.
